Trips beyond Vancouver
Some of the region's most popular places are not in the City of Vancouver. Treat them as real trips with their own transportation, weather and timing rather than squeezing them into spare hours.
Where to go next
North Vancouver
Grouse Mountain, Capilano-area attractions, Lonsdale Quay and mountain access. SeaBus makes Lower Lonsdale particularly easy from downtown.
Richmond
YVR, Steveston, major Asian dining districts and waterfront history. For deeper local planning, see this independent Richmond visitor guide.
Burnaby
Metrotown, Burnaby Mountain, Deer Lake and major regional parks. The Burnaby city planning guide is useful when the trip extends east of Vancouver.
Surrey
A large city south of the Fraser with distinct communities, parks and event areas. Use the Surrey communities and visitor resource before treating Surrey as one destination.
Langley
Fort Langley, wineries, farms and rural Township attractions work better as a dedicated day. See the Langley trip-planning guide.
Whistler
A major mountain destination north of Vancouver via the Sea-to-Sky Highway. It deserves a full day at minimum and usually an overnight stay.
Vancouver to Whistler
Whistler is about 120 km from Vancouver by Highway 99, with typical driving time around two hours when conditions cooperate. Tourism Whistler lists scheduled coach/shuttle choices as well as private transfers. If you want a reserved vehicle and flexible departure, a private Sea-to-Sky transfer service can be compared with the scheduled coach options.
Fraser Valley extensions
For longer regional trips, Maple Ridge and Abbotsford lead into a different landscape of farms, mountains, trails and Fraser Valley communities. Our related guides cover Maple Ridge trip ideas and outdoor stops and Abbotsford attractions and visitor planning.
Do not underestimate regional distances
Metro Vancouver spans multiple municipalities, bridges and traffic corridors. A destination that appears close on a map may not belong in the same half-day itinerary. Check live conditions before leaving.
Best rule for day trips
Choose one regional destination and do it properly. Whistler, the North Shore, Richmond food exploration and the Fraser Valley are different days, not a single sightseeing loop.
