Vancouver's museums are spread across downtown, Chinatown, Vanier Park and UBC. Choose by subject first, then geography. A museum that perfectly matches your interests is usually worth more than visiting three simply because they appear on a top-ten list.
Which museum should you choose?
Museum of Anthropology at UBC
Best for Indigenous art, cultural belongings, architecture and global collections. Located at UBC, so allow travel time from downtown.
Museum of Vancouver
Best for Vancouver's civic and social history. Its Vanier Park location makes it easy to pair with the Maritime Museum or Kitsilano.
Vancouver Maritime Museum
Best for coastal, Arctic and working-harbour history. The St. Roch is a central part of the experience.
Chinese Canadian Museum
Located in Chinatown's historic Wing Sang Building and focused on Chinese Canadian histories, migration, community and identity.
Beaty Biodiversity Museum
Best for natural history and families interested in biology. The 26-metre blue whale skeleton is the signature exhibit.
Roedde House Museum
A smaller West End heritage-house experience for visitors interested in late-Victorian family life and Vancouver history.
Build a museum cluster
Vanier Park: Museum of Vancouver + Vancouver Maritime Museum, then Kitsilano or Granville Island. UBC: Museum of Anthropology + Beaty Biodiversity Museum, with campus or Pacific Spirit time. Chinatown: Chinese Canadian Museum + Chinatown Storytelling Centre + neighbourhood food. These combinations save far more time than selecting museums only by popularity.
Admission and hours
Museum prices, exhibitions and opening hours change. Some offer evening hours, special exhibitions or free/discounted periods. Check the museum's official site on the day you finalize the itinerary rather than relying on a static price copied months earlier.
How long to allow
For a major museum such as MOA, allow at least two hours if the subject matters to you. Smaller museums can work in 60–90 minutes. Add transportation, coat/bag handling, food and museum-shop time when building the schedule.
