Choose the right part of Vancouver
Vancouver is not one uniform visitor district. The City recognizes 22 areas, while visitors also use familiar district names such as Gastown, Coal Harbour and Yaletown. Boundaries are not always universally agreed, so this guide focuses on the practical question: which area best fits the day you want?
Best areas by trip style
First visit
Downtown + West End: easiest access to major sights, Stanley Park, waterfront and transit.
History + architecture
Gastown + Chinatown: geographically close but culturally distinct. Give both real time.
Beach + outdoors
Kitsilano + West End: choose one side of False Creek as your main base for the day rather than bouncing between beaches.
Food + local streets
Mount Pleasant + Commercial Drive: stronger for repeat visitors and people who enjoy neighbourhood businesses.
Waterfront + views
Coal Harbour + Yaletown: both have waterfront access, but they sit on different sides of downtown and feel very different.
Events
Downtown + Yaletown: practical for BC Place and Rogers Arena, especially when transit replaces event-day parking.
Neighbourhood guides
Do you need a car to explore Vancouver neighbourhoods?
Usually not for the areas in this guide. Downtown, West End, Gastown, Chinatown, Yaletown and Coal Harbour are particularly transit- and walking-friendly. Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Commercial Drive are also practical by transit. A vehicle becomes more useful when the itinerary includes luggage, multiple hotel pickups, mobility requirements or destinations outside Vancouver.
Better planning beats more stops
Choose one or two compatible areas per day. Vancouver's bridges, event traffic and regional geography make a short-looking cross-city itinerary slower than it appears on a map.
